A Daily Check-In

A Daily Check-In

I believe selflessness is one of our greatest superpowers.

Within the wellness community, we often hear about the importance of caring for others, serving our communities, and leading with compassion. I couldn’t agree more. But I’ve also learned that even our greatest strengths need balance.

Too much selflessness without self-care eventually leaves us depleted.

Too much focus on ourselves eventually leaves those around us depleted.

Real wellness lives somewhere in the middle.

Every once in a while, I think it’s healthy to ask ourselves a few honest questions…

Are you a giver…or a taker?

Are you teaching your children well?

Are you honoring your elders?

How do you really feel today?

Are you a caring member of society…or are you simply hoping people think you are?

Are you truly walking the walk—or just talking the talk?

Those questions aren’t meant to make us feel guilty. They’re simply invitations to pause.

The truth is, every one of us drifts off course from time to time. We get tired. We become overwhelmed. Sometimes we slip into a season where life becomes all about us, and we don’t even notice it’s happening. Other times we give so much of ourselves that we forget who we are.

Neither place is where we want to live.

If you discover that you aren’t living as authentically as you’d like, that’s okay. There isn’t a prize for pretending. There is tremendous freedom in simply saying, “I’ve drifted a little. Today, I’m choosing a new direction.”

You can always begin again—with intention.

Authenticity asks us to put our masks down.

That can feel uncomfortable. Maybe you’re angry. Maybe you’re sad. Maybe you’re disappointed. Maybe you’re carrying grief that no one else can see.

Those feelings don’t make you weak.

Pretending they don’t exist, however, can slowly separate you from the person you truly are. When we spend too much time performing instead of living honestly, we risk losing touch with ourselves. And when authenticity fades, selfishness, manipulation, and ego often find room to grow.

That’s why I believe in a daily check-in.

Not to judge ourselves.

Not to criticize ourselves.

Simply to notice.

To make small adjustments before they become big ones.

There’s an old saying that always makes me smile:

“Check yourself before you wreck yourself.”

It may sound funny, but there’s wisdom hidden inside it.

Take care of yourself.

Protect your peace.

Rest when you need to.

Ask for help when you need it.

But remember that your healing shouldn’t come at the expense of someone else’s peace. Likewise, caring for others shouldn’t require sacrificing your own.

Balance is found where self-care and selflessness meet.

That’s the place I hope to live.

Here’s the simple recipe I strive for every day:

Be real.
Don’t be selfish.
Take good care of the people you love.
Be open.

I certainly don’t get it right every day, but I do try to check in with myself often. Because I believe the most authentic people aren’t perfect—they’re simply willing to be honest, make adjustments, and keep growing.

That’s a life worth living.
