Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about balance and boundaries.
I’ve realized that balance isn’t something I find once and keep forever. It’s something I practice. Every day. Sometimes every hour.
When I picture my own boundaries, I often imagine an old stone garden wall. It isn’t built to keep the beauty of the world out. It’s there to protect what I’ve carefully planted and nurtured inside.
Those gates are important.
I can open them to welcome kindness, friendship, new ideas, laughter, learning, and love. I can also close them when something doesn’t feel right. The gates remind me that I have a choice.
Some days that’s easy. Other days it’s harder.
I’ve always tried to live with an open heart. I genuinely enjoy helping people and seeing the good in them. But I’ve learned that not everyone enters with the same intentions. Occasionally someone mistakes openness for weakness. They see kindness as permission to take more than they’re willing to give.
Sometimes they get through my gate before I notice.
Instead of feeling disappointed in myself, I simply make a small repair to the wall, strengthen the gate, and learn something new.
Every experience teaches me a little more about what belongs in my garden and what doesn’t.
I’ve also learned that saying “no” doesn’t make me unkind. Closing the gate isn’t punishment. It’s protection.
Healthy boundaries create balance.
When my garden is cared for, I have more patience, more creativity, more energy, and more love to share with the people who truly value being invited inside.
Perhaps that’s the lesson.
We don’t have to build taller walls every time someone disappoints us. We simply become wiser gatekeepers. We learn to recognize what nourishes us and what quietly drains us.
Your garden deserves tending.
And your gates… those belong to you.
Open them with intention. Close them without guilt. Trust yourself to know the difference.
May your garden bloom with all the things that bring you peace, joy, and balance.
