Sunday Centerpieces
Something new we’re leaning into this year is hosting Sunday family dinner as often as we can. Last week we hosted our very first one, and it was so much fun. We squeezed eight family members and two friends into our tiny house, set up one long table in the living room, and—just like that—it worked beautifully.
One little intention I’ve set for these dinners is to create a centerpiece that sparks conversation. Not fancy. Not precious. Just curious.
Last week’s centerpiece included camellia leaves, a bird’s nest with a tiny ladybug tucked inside, a pink velvet Jesus Magic 8 Ball (because of course), a yarmulke for Jesus’ head, and a couple of crystals for good measure. Off to the side, a small dish of gnomes waited patiently to join the scene.
And guess what? It worked.

The table buzzed with laughter, questions, interpretations, and stories. The centerpiece became a conversation starter, then a conversation keeper. At one point it even evolved into a spirited round of Jesus/Gnome Jenga—which I’m pretty sure is its own spiritual practice.
We’re gathering again this Sunday, and I’m already imagining the next centerpiece: perhaps an owl, a handful of Girl Scout patches, and maybe even a cootie bug. We’ll see what shows up.
So the next time you host a meal—whether it’s family, friends, or a mix of both—consider creating a funky, unexpected centerpiece. Let it be a little weird. Let it invite curiosity. You never know what conversations (or games) might unfold around the table.
Here’s to good food, shared laughter, and centerpieces that tell stories. 💛
